Tour 4 : Mountain & ancient desert oasis tour

This trip begins with a journey through the foothills of the Jebel Nafusa mountain range to the small village of Nalut, perched high on the escarpment overlooking a vast plateau. Travelling deeper into the Sahara, we visit the ancient desert oasis town of Ghadames where we spend a full day. You will discover some of Libya's little known Berber villages on our return to the coast. The trip concludes with a visit to the three cities of the ancient 'tripolis', Leptis Magna, Oea (Tripoli), and Sabratha.

Day 1, Tripoli: Meet at Djerba airport and transfer overland to Tripoli.

Day 2, Nalut and Ghadames: Journey through the foothills of the Jebel Nafusa mountain range to Nalut. See the 300 year-old mud-brick ksar whose chambers (ghorfas) housed grain and oil in times past, and the even older Alala mosque. Continue on to Ghadames.

Day 3, Ghadames: Spend the day exploring the old town. Visit tiny vacated houses, the historic House Museum, ancient mosques, market places, and gardens. Special cultural evening with traditional Tuareg entertainment.

Day 4, To Misrata via Gharyan, Yefren, Al-Ghala: Journey back across the desert to Gharyan. See the remarkable Berber troglodyte houses before continuing on to the perched villages of Yefren and Al-Ghala. The latter is a fine example of the traditional arrangement of upper and lower villages. Continue on to Misrata on the coast, where we relax for the evening.

Day 5, Leptis Magna: A full day excursion to the Roman archaeological site of Leptis Magna. Informative guided tour of the site and visit to the museum. Return to Tripoli.

Day 6, Tripoli: Guided tour of Libya's capital. See the medina, Jamahiriya Museum, Gazelle Fountain, Roman Arch of Marcus Aurelius, Green Square and Gurgi Mosque. There is also time for shopping and generally soaking in the ambience of the city.

Day 7, Sabratha and Djerba: A short drive to the Roman city of Sabratha. Half day guided tour of this splendid site, including the museum. Continue on to Djerba for an evening of relaxation in a traditional hotel.
