Tour 5 : Roman ruins and traditional villages tour

This trip also takes us through the foothills of the Jebel Nafusa mountain range to the small village of Nalut, and on to Ghadames, where we spend a full day. We then visit the nearby Roman ruins at Ras al Ghoul and journey by camel across the dunes to lovely Lake Mujazim, where it is perfect for swimming. On our return to Tripoli we visit some of Libya's traditional Berber villages. Our final two days are spent on the coast in Tripoli and in the ancient Roman city of Sabratha.

Day 1, Tripoli: Meet at Djerba airport and transfer overland to Tripoli.

Day 2, Nalut and Ghadames: Drive through the foothills of the Jebel Nafusa mountain range to Nalut. See the 300 year-old mud-brick ksar whose chambers (ghorfas) housed grain and oil in times past, and the even older Alala mosque. Continue on to Ghadames.

Day 3, Ghadames: Spend the day exploring the old town. Visit tiny vacated houses, the historic House Museum, ancient mosques, market places, and gardens. Special cultural evening with traditional Tuareg entertainment.

Day 4, Ras al Ghoul, Camel Trek to Lake Mujazim: Morning excursion to the Roman ruins at Rag al Ghoul (Haunted Hill). Afternoon journey by camel across the dunes to the beautiful oasis lake of Mujazim, whose waters are saltier than the sea. There is an opportunity for swimming in this lake, which is picturesquely surrounded by golden sand and rocky hills. Return to Ghadames.

Day 5, To Tripoli via Gharyan, Yefren, Al-Ghala: Journey back across the desert to Gharyan. See the remarkable Berber troglodyte houses before continuing on to the perched villages of Yefren and Al-Ghala. The latter is a fine example of the traditional arrangement of upper and lower villages. Continue on to Tripoli, where we relax for the evening.

Day 6, Tripoli: Guided tour of Libya's capital. See the medina, Jamahiriya Museum, Gazelle Fountain, Roman Arch of Marcus Aurelius, Green Square and Gurgi Mosque. There is also time for shopping and generally soaking in the ambience of the city.

Day 7, Sabratha and Djerba: A short drive to the Roman city of Sabratha. Half day guided tour of this splendid site, including the museum. Continue on to Djerba for an evening of relaxation in a traditional hotel.
